Conversion by Concussion
By Brennan Manning

“The ministry of evangelism is an extraordinary opportunity of showing gratitude to Jesus by passing on His gospel of grace to others. However, the ‘conversion by concussion’ method with one sledgehammer blow of the Bible after another betrays a basic disrespect for the dignity of the other and is utterly alien to the gospel imperative to bear witness. To evangelize a person is to say to him or her; you, too, are loved by God in the Lord Jesus. And not only to say it but to really think it and relate it to the man or woman so they can sense it. This is what it means to announce the Good News. But that becomes possible by offering a person your friendship; a friendship that is real, unselfish, without condescension, full of confidence, and profound esteem.”

I have one more word on being a friend to sinners. If you try too hard, they will see through you. And the way they know that it’s all a part of the evangelism game is when we press for the close. My first year out of college I sold cars to pay off my student loans. I did well because I wasn’t a “salesman.” I applied for the job because I genuinely liked the car that I was driving and thought that I could sell them – and I could! In fact, I was “Salesman of the Month” for the first four months in a row because my enthusiasm for the product was genuine. How enthusiastic for “the product” are you? Are you enjoying your relationship with Jesus? Is He changing your life day by day?  Because, if He’s not and if it’s all about getting some stranger to say the sinner’s prayer, then we will fail before we begin. It’s about loving others with the love that is in us supplied by Jesus Christ. And it might take awhile – weeks, months, even years – but people are worth it!

Editorial: It’s what we’ve been saying all along as a strategy for ministry. Like Jesus, we must become “a friend of sinners.” True, like Jesus, we will receive criticism from some, which is all the more reason why we must live in integrity! We must be accountable to another brother or sister, minister in pairs, and make sure that our own lives are free from the appearance of all evil.
